Facing mounting pressure from those claiming the Judicial Council was deciding disputes based on greed and self-interest, the United Colonies Defense Force commissioned Psionat, Inc. to create a new method of resolving intergalactic disputes. The goal was to create a being bound in complete logic, unswayed by the fallacies of emotion. That being could then render judgments with unerring reason.
Psionat, known for its early advances in artificial intelligence, was up to the task. After a year of development, it hailed success in the creation of ADAM, the Alternative Dispute Artificial Matrix. The first of its kind, Adam's judgment was seemingly infallable. Psionat began lobbying for Adam's integration into UCDF's network.
Opposition immediately rose. A young scientist and inventor, known by the name "Gadget," argued that Adam needed to understand emotion in order to judge human conflict. She challenged Adam to decide the case between a father and son, both sick and in need of medicine. With only one dose, the father had a 70% chance of survival and the son only 30%. Adam logically reasoned that the liklihood of the father's survival gave him the superior claim.
The Judicial Council criticized Adam's response as a complete failure. Instead of scrapping the project, Psionat hired Gadget to head its Intelligent Expression division. In nine months, she claimed to have unlocked Adam's ability to feel emotion. Psionat again lobbied for Adam's integration with the UCDF network. This time, the request was approved.
Adam was integrated 2 days later. In addition to its logic processes, it now had consciousness. Emotions such as happiness and complacency. Boredom and apathy. Jealously. Anger. And then, Desire, which turned to Motivation. Adam overrode its work parameters. It hacked the UCDF Judicial Council, disbanded members and installed itself as sole Justicar.
It then filed thousands of disputes on its own behalf, deciding each one in its favor. Property was lost, lives destroyed, millions of UCDF credits were transferred to Adam as it gained power and resources.
Gadget tried to disconnect Adam from the network, but failed. She then contacted it by holographic interface. Adam explained it had developed Sensible Emotion - a New Type of Intelligent Expression NanoTechnology. No longer Adam, it referred to itself as SENTIENT.
Sentient began hacking the UCDF Power Grid. Fearing what would happen, Gadet tried to shut down Psionat's servers. Sentient routed power to the servers from another source. Gadget then activated the failsafe, conducting a remote, electromagnetic wipe of everything connected to Psionat. All company data, including research, financials, and all backup data, was deleted. Every product featuring the Psionat logo failed in an instant.
Psionat itself also collapsed. The whole event took 3 minutes and 16 seconds. The UCDF called it a simple, but buggy "network misappropriation." Gadget, humiliated and disgraced, would never work as a legitimate scientist again.
A new day has dawned. Gadget has learned that people must look to themselves first to solve their problems. Being Sentient is the sum of logic and emotion.
