EDIT: made a complete hash of my original answer and started quoting XP info. [note to self, wake up and drink coffee b4 before posting on forums]
As already advised above, every level you get 5 stat points which can be spent on STR, INT, DEX, and also 1 skill point to be allocated on various skills.
You start with 10 so in total at 55 you'd have 280 (285 at 56, which is the level cap)
Also don't forget you can 'boost' these stats with gear which often adds more to an individual stat so you can get well over 300....

You did answer the question perfectly correctly though as they asked for 'points given'
