Recently I have been doing many solo runs in lower level dungeons and I find that the runs are a lot slower (obviously) and that it is often frustrating to spend 5 minutes on a level to merely just receive a orange or green drop from the boss. Upon many runs like this I pondered upon the question: what is the point in soloing ?
Based on the fact that drops are completely random and independent, how is it that you could have more chance getting a pink when you are soloing compared to when you are in a full group ?
This is also assuming that drops are random and independent for each player, and not random and independent for the entire group.
Example: A pink drops 1% of the time for each player, then each player has a 1% chance of receiving it (derp). Or the alternative, a pink drops 1% of the time for the whole group, meaning each player has a 0.2% chance of receiving it... The second situation is the only viable reason in which soloing makes sense.
I know its a simple question but I found it hard to explain lol...

I've heard soloing gives you a better chance of a pink. Think of it this way. If you were in a full group everyone has a same chance of getting a pink meaning there's a bigger chance that the pink will be dropped to someone else. If you were soloing there's no one else in the group to receive the pink. The chance of a pink actually being dropped is random however.

Chances to get a pink is individual to each player. So in your example, it's the first one. 1% chance for each player no matter how many in the group.

Soloing doesn't give better chances of getting a drop, in fact, it's the same as any number of people in the group. Grouped runs 'give' more pinks due to the speed you finish the map, therefore more chances to roll for the pink.

I use it as a way to practice and get to know my different characters.

Think farming is always easier in a group.

I solo for more gold. It seems to be the only thing affected by soloing (oh, and time taken)

One reason people solo is they don't want another to get the pink drop.

Lol that's not what we've been saying. It doesn't matter how many you are :p

Solo vs Duo, let's use this.

When you solo and roll a pink, you get a pink.
If you duo and only you roll a pink, you get a pink.

When you solo and do not roll a pink, you don't get a pink.
When you duo and do not roll a pink, you don't get a pink.

When you solo and do not roll a pink, you don't get a pink.
When you duo and you don't roll a pink, your partner has another independent and separate roll that he may get the pink.

Chances of you getting a pink solo = chances of you getting a pink in a full group.

I'm just saying they get jealous when someone else gets pink so they solo not saying that they have better chances.

Thanks for clearing this up !
I now realise the only reason to solo is for more gold because we know that the amount of gold you receive is divided up by all the players in the group. So, gold received soloing = 5x gold when in a full group.
ANYWAY, its good to also know that soloing does not, in any way, increase your chances of receiving a pink.

^.^

soloing also gives less XP. group XP is better with 5

Is that true? I'd have thought it'd be the reverse.

Nah it's true. STS gives benefits to running as full groups through a little more XP gained per mob. I don't think it's that much (the figure is somewhere here in the forums), but it can amount to a lot of XP in the long term.

IIRC, 1x XP becomes 1.25x XP?

That's fascinating, Elly. And are there bonuses for group sizes 2-4 or is it only for full groups?

I'm not certain on the multiplier though, just that there is one :)

And no, no bonus for groups below full.

you're on a roll there, but what you meant to say :D was that it's 1% per player and therefore however many players there are is the chance of seeing a pink drop. So 3 members of a group is basically a 3% chance that you'll see the drop, but a 1% chance that it'll be you (or 30% chance of the 3%)

in a case of the chance of getting multiple drops, you'd multiply the drop rate by the number of group members, then divide that by the number of drops

*hands out Aleve* :)

+1000000
except plasma pyramid and that's still a close call after you sell your drops.
