If I am not mistaken, the empty elixir vial costs 10 tokens, so even if the elixirs give you tokens, its of no use.
Currently the token rewards seem really harsh but I am guessing as we move further into the content, the rewards from bosses & dailies should shoot up to look better.

they are also used to craft the balanced mythic weapon (see crafting)
