I have tried it but have not been able to apply the same practices as other games where you would say Skill > Regular > Skill > Regular > Skill > or in a manner that maximizes cooldowns to have less periods of just regular attacks. Has anyone figured out a pattern or is this pointless in SL? Or did I miss it in that one guide I read, I'll double check.

If the SL system is anything like PL, I wouldn't worry about weaving. In PL, it's confirmed that skill damage/usage doesn't override normal attacks. So spam away, and your normal attacks should still happen.
