Welcome to the first annual Star Legends Halloween Haiku Contest! If you're interested in participating please read on for the rules, how to submit your entry, and potential prizes up for grabs. The Star Legends Halloween Haiku Contest is pretty simple. First and foremost, what exactly is a haiku?



hai·ku ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hk) n. pl. haiku, also hai·kus

A Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons. A poem written in this form.

Examples:
Those crazed Commandos
Always charging into tank
SPLAT No Engineer

My Operative
Destroyer of aliens
Likes to eat candy!

See? Not too hard: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables on 3 unrhymed lines.



The Rules

1) You must abide by the Spacetime Studios Terms of Service (http://www.spacetimestudios.com/termsofservice.php).

2) You must be registered on the Spacetime Studios Forums to participate. All entries will be posted in this thread.

3) Only one entry per account. Each person is allowed to submit two haikus but they must be included within the same post.

4) The haiku should be about Star Legends. It also should be themed around Halloween (Death, Ghosts, Candy, etc.) The tone you set is up to you, comedic, sad, angry, etc. Have fun with it and be creative!

5) Keep the haikus clean please, this contest is intended for the whole community, the young and the elderly =D

6) The contest deadline is Monday, October 31st at Midnight EST




How To Submit Your Entry

Please include your main IGN name
(Optional) If you'd like to represent your guild, please post it under your IGN. Will be for possible winning purposes. (Ex: Congratulations to "IGN" of "guild" for taking Xth place.)

The Prizes

First Place: 55,000 credits and 40 Platinum

Second Place: 35,000 credits and 30 Platinum

Third Place: 25,000 credits and 20 Platinum

Fourth Place: 15,000 credits and 10 Platinum




That's about it! Be sure to have your entries posted before 11:59 EST on Monday, October 31st. Once all entries are in the judges will pick their four favorites. Results may take up to a week prior to the contest ending to be determined. I and the other possible judges unfortunately have to work..lol

For this contest I'll let words such as "You're" or "I'll" pass as one syllable when said and you can also use contractions. I didn't distinguish those rules at the beginning of the contest and adding them late in the contest would be unfair. For future contests I will definitely keep this in mind. Hope you're not too disappointed Kahlua!

Yes but in any formal forms of writing, contractions are supposed to be written out as the two words.
This is a formal contest, especially by the addition of platinum as a reward, and the question needed to be asked.

@rodvik - hah I'm fine with that, I wasn't going to use one but now I will, and I think only Ebalere did anyways, and he could have just removed "bro" and it would have worked fine.

Granted I know the more entries the tougher the chances to win..lol but I would like to get as many participants playing as possible =D Thats why I created this specific contest to begin with because it was whole community friendly =D as opposed to a screenshot contest where only a select few could play.

Ahhh didn't even think of that...I would assume no, because it's different from contractions where you say You Are as You're...lol is still said as laugh out loud...because it's an abbreviation. Something like "lawl" would work if we had to include this because it's not really a word, more slang really...but generally means the same thing.

Don't take this as me taking over your contest Rodvik, just posting suggestions :) I already have my two entries in and won't be changing them no matter what happens.

Sorry it took so long to respond, but since I didn't predefine this ordeal in the rules, words such as "lol" will be accepted as one syllable. It would be unfair at this point to make entrees go back and change their submissions. It also depends how you pronounce the word. Some say "lawl" 1 syllable and some say "El-Oh-El", in the dictionary, sadly, they refer to the word as "el-oh-el" 3 syllables. I suppose we can base internet chat terminology based on how we would pronounce it. For example, "omg", if we were all to see this we would all say "Oh My God" 3 syllables. I can't even pronounce "omg" in 1 syllable, it just sounds funny. For future contests I will be sure to make it clear that if you use internet terminology we will be going by Dictionary pronunciation.

Oh how society has changed in the last few years and internet terms are actually defined in an English Dictionary...lol

The first poem is written from the sight of a child, with the exception of the last line, sorta. Second is written from the perspective of an adult.

In a way, some kids are really inconsiderate. Ive seen some people who go Trick or Treating just for the candy, and nothing else. Not even to hang out with friends. If i could, i would tell my parents to not spend so much and let me only give candy to the little ones who arent greedy. But that would be really disapppointing and mean to the others. I hope you liked the poem and my meaning to it :D

For those willing to do the reading, there is a slightly stricter form of Haiku that is based on something (don't recall, I'll edit if I find it soon) a bit stricter than syllables. A bit like how some syllables "feel" larger than others...I think using that form should result in Haiku that just flows better and hopefully will be rewarded. I'll be submitting mine somewhere between "last moment" (a la Kahlua's idea, which I feel, of not giving up your ideas too soon) and "right now" - somewhere in the middle so that if it is liked it has a chance to be noticed.

Welcome to the first annual Star Legends Halloween Haiku Contest! If you're interested in participating please read on for the rules, how to submit your entry, and potential prizes up for grabs. The Star Legends Halloween Haiku Contest is pretty simple. First and foremost, what exactly is a haiku?




Examples:
Those crazed Commandos
Always charging into tank
SPLAT No Engineer

My Operative
Destroyer of aliens
Likes to eat candy!

See? Not too hard: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables on 3 unrhymed lines.



The Rules

1) You must abide by the Spacetime Studios Terms of Service (http://www.spacetimestudios.com/termsofservice.php).

2) You must be registered on the Spacetime Studios Forums to participate. All entries will be posted in this thread.

3) Only one entry per account. Each person is allowed to submit two haikus but they must be included within the same post.

4) The haiku should be about Star Legends. It also should be themed around Halloween (Death, Ghosts, Candy, etc.) The tone you set is up to you, comedic, sad, angry, etc. Have fun with it and be creative!

5) Keep the haikus clean please, this contest is intended for the whole community, the young and the elderly =D

6) The contest deadline is Monday, October 31st at Midnight EST




How To Submit Your Entry

Please include your main IGN name
(Optional) If you'd like to represent your guild, please post it under your IGN. Will be for possible winning purposes. (Ex: Congratulations to "IGN" of "guild" for taking Xth place.)

The Prizes

First Place: 55,000 credits and 40 Platinum

Second Place: 35,000 credits and 30 Platinum

Third Place: 25,000 credits and 20 Platinum

Fourth Place: 15,000 credits and 10 Platinum




That's about it! Be sure to have your entries posted before 11:59 EST on Monday, October 31st. Once all entries are in the judges will pick their four favorites. Results may take up to a week prior to the contest ending to be determined. I and the other possible judges unfortunately have to work..lol

There are numerous ways to write Haiku's but the 5-7-5 pattern with only 17 syllables was typically the English standard for haiku. For this competition I require you to write with the 5-7-5 flow. It is why I announced it in the original post as:


hai·ku ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hk) n. pl. haiku, also hai·kus

A Japanese lyric verse form having three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables, traditionally invoking an aspect of nature or the seasons. A poem written in this form.

Granted I didn't want to make the competition too complicated to enter and to judge with other forms of haiku so I chose the basic one that most people are familiar with.

So please when writing your haikus use the format I have asked.


Also for your comment of being noticed you won't have to worry about that, ALL the haikus will get attention. The way I plan on doing the judging will be bias/favortism free, submitters names and guilds will be replaced with a # and they will not be included on the haiku compilation sheet so the judging sheet will just be a sheet of xxx amount of haikus and numbers that correspond back to the owner of that haiku that only I will have, so everyone will get a fair chance at winning the competition..=)

Uh I am going to participate soon, dont need the plat, def need the credits ... the 5-7-5 format is a little on the strict side considering haiku can be 17 syllables or fewer, but im going to stick to the format of 5-7-5 in my entry... and um... about the season thing, it neednt be overtly to do with seasons, more like a slight reference to changes in nature, or even just natural forces is an essential ingredient in haiku, but the competition has to do with Halloween so the contest is about seasons to begin with... ok now im gonna get down to righting em.
