They only need your contact data if you decide to use the referral option in the Spacetime Nexus. They don't mine or read your contacts for any other reason.

The READ_PHONE_STATE permission is used for tapjoy. The READ_CONTACTS permission is used for referrals.

I believe that's used with push notifications.
