Through tons of practice and experimenting, you'll get better and better in no time ;)

Btw, is this contest still on? I was randomly fooling around on sbp and came up with a cute 'pet' haha.
Though, I realized how hard it was to paint shadows and reflections on gold and put it in hold...ill post my entry later

If you don't have the ability, you really won't be able to get far. Aiming to get my abilities up to par with an iPhone app was like learning to draw again. You gain higher capabilities when working digitally, and it makes the craft a lot easier. Draw with the pencil tool with low opacity to get the initial sketch down.. Then create a new layer and highlight the sketch with the thin tip marker, erasing to sharpen the lines, then delete or hide the previous layer. Repeat as nessecary. It's tedious, but once you get the hang of it it's second nature.

When you color, always have a seperate layer for every color, especially different shades. Blend the shades in together using the air brush tool on about a .2 opacity, rubbing in the colors till they blend. If your confident that the shading it blended enough, combine the layers accordingly to make room for more layers (the full version limits you to 12, while the light version cripples you to a mere 3; which is practically impossible to work with.) also make use of the round eraser tool when blending, also with a .2 opacity (or .1 to stay on the safe side)

The drawing I did of the red head might have been made up of 50 different layers that were combined as I went, being maxed out at 12. I have the Pro version for iPad (4.99 USD) and the Mobile version on my iPhone (2.99 USD.) The tablet version is incredibly superior, and even offers more tools and options. I've used my iPhone as well but I try to avoid it unless I'm on the road. My work is much cleaner done the iPad than my phone, as you can see below from my iPhone created work

Barb did you use the line trace technique? It's the most optimal method when creating work on any digital program. I use it all the time, I sketch out my drawing on paper then after taking a picture of it, I trace over it on sketchbook. My pet entry was completely freehand though :p

Iphone/Ipod/Android/IPad: Sketchbook or Sketchbook Pro (as you can see above in the thread)

If you use sketchbook on the iOS and android products, you can export it into Dropbox and open and work on it I photoshop (it gets saved as a psd file :)) and across any device. I've done pieces where I transferred for my iPad, to my iPhone to work on the go, and then from my phone to photoshop to work on it at school. So as you can see, sketchbook pro or mobile are the best choices in the app store. The tablet version is more complete.

I used sketch book pro on iPad to fix me a pet-like Phoenix. Too much detail for PL, but it's all about ideas. Would be nice to resurrect this Phoenix from a mob, then sending it to eat a 2nd mob :)

Human faces took a lot of trial and error. I can email you the .psd file of one of my works and you can open it up on sketchbook and study it. Besides that it just takes a lot of time to get it down, just a lot of practice.

I used the 8b pencil for the outline, the air brush tool with low opacity when needed for the face, played around with the brushes for the hair, air brush and 8b for the eyes, and I used the round eraser tool to blend the colors together. Remember to use a separate layer for EVERY shade of color, placing the darker shade over the lighter one and using the round eraser on the darker shade to make it look blended with the lighter shade.
