I think the main thing is that you can awake weapon, belt, ring, pendant and artifact.
Awaken add stats and also gold loot (you can multiply gold drops from mob/boss).
Nowadays locked farming is no more the only way to make money. Mausoleum 5/6 can give you a decent amount of money each run (40/80k with 300% gold loot, depending on map).
Btw Jarl and KM3 doesn’t drop lockeds anymore.
