Here are a few rules/tips that I follow before joining a guild in any mmo.

1. Take time and look at all the different types of guilds there are before you join.
Reason: There are many types of guilds out there that my suit your play style. The guild you join is a place where you should feel like you get the most of your gaming experience. If your PvE oriented then go for a PvE guild, if your PvP oriented then go for a Pvp guild. etc..

2. Your guild is your second family.
Reason: Guilds are a organized group of players that share a common goal. There in place for you keep in touch with your friends as well as play different levels with each other. They are there to help you if you help them. You have to be involved to have credibility in the guild.

3. Loyalty and Respect
Not only do you represent your self in the game, you also represent your guild. If player do not follow a code of conduct this makes the guild look bad. Your actions reflect how your guild looks.

4. Guild Hopping!
This is a huge problem in mmo's. If you hop guilds players will end up blacklisting you from joining. Guilds are a commitment and those who continually leave a guild every few patches do not look good. You end up looking like you wasted everyones time if they help you and you leave. I was in AEO for almost 10 months or so and I see people leaving guilds after a week.

Remember these rules/tips and you will have a better time with your guild experience.

key points for playing, great for players that are new to mmo's in general.

also adding as unofficial #4:
-Dont make your goal in the game to become head honcho in a guild. Your activity and helpfulness will get you noticed or appreciated for its sincerity.
(same for game awards in general)
