View Full Version : Android app cache (patches) get cleared every couple of reboots

This happens to both SL and PL.

I reboot my phone every day or two to keep it fresh.

I noticed that with the update that changed the way scaled drops work, I started to have to repatch. I opened the game, patching starts. I'm like huh, there was a patch? Didn't think anything of it.

Couple of days later, I knew I had the patches and checked each app's Cache for the heck of it. It said 0.00b Cache data for both apps, and I know I didn't clear it.

Today I just had to repatch PL after a reboot, but I know I didn't clear the cache myself. And checking SL, the cache is empty also.

They seem to lose the cache (patch) data between every couple of reboots now. Can this be fixed please? I don't like needlessly redownloading patches. It wastes my data and time.

Thank you.

From reading this it doesn't seem much that STS have any control of buddy, seems like a Device fault. =\

Will have look if I get time :)

You'd think that Bod, but no. This wasn't happening until recently, and there have been no OS updates to my device since I got Gingerbread, MONTHS ago.

It has to be a device fault as bod said

NOTHING HAS CHANGED WITH MY DEVICE. This just started happening randomly upon reboot. Not my fault. It's a bug and I'm trying to report it so they could fix it to how it was before when this wasn't happening.

My cache data is also 0. Have you tried deleting and reinstalling the apps? I would suggest that first.

See. I'm not crazy.

Did it work for you Death? I would reinstall them but I kinda like my quick chats, and those don't get saved on the server.

About to email support.

List your current apps please. I use to have this problem, but I realised what easy causing it. I need a list of all your apps if that is possible.

I don't need any games. Just give me the names of all apps that you have, no games.
Ex. Mine are(no games no stock apps)
Advanced Task Manager
Pingchat
STS
History Eraser

These are the only apps I use.
I would like to know the apps you use and have.

Bron, my cache is 0 too, im hoping everyone's is.

Any IT or Technical support say the first thing to do is either turn it off and back on, or uninstall and re-install.

Why not copy your pre-sets to a notepad app then re-paste when you re-install.

This is for the STS games.

Non games are:

Flash 11.1, Advanced Dictionary & Thesaurus, Advanced Task Cleaner Pro, AIM (not latest version), Amazon mp3, Amazon app store, Barcode Scanner, Best Buy app, Best Buy reward zone, Bookmarks Manager, Call Light, Download All Files, Easytether, Ebuddy, couple ROM game downloaders for old systems, FileBrowser, Fish Bowl Photo Gallery, Gift Card rewards app, Gmail, Hand in Glove, some ebook apps that were removed from Market, Jota Text Editor, Yahoo mail (hate this app, can't fully remove it), Google Maps, Trendmicro Mobile Security, T-Mobile My Account, My Daily Free Amazon App, MyMSN, NYCMate, OfficeSuite 5 (Amazon), PokeDroid, PokeDroid Extras (both removed from the market), Pokemon IV Calculator, Sexy Anime Girls Wallpapers (removed from market cause Google didn't like it even though there's no nudity), SlideME Marketplace, Smart Battery Monitor, Spacetime forum app, Speed Test, Star Trek Soundboard, Star Trek Sounds (both removed from market, no idea why), T-Mobile mall, Translator widget, Trillian (beta version I didn't uninstall yet), Ventriloid, Voice Search, XfDroid, XfMobile, XWindDownloader.

And these are all non-games. The rest are games.

I keep PL and SL on my phone memory and not on the SD card. If I keep them on the SD card the patches NEVER save. After patching and closing the apps, the cache shows the same amount as J, give or take (that is a tablet right?). This stays until a couple reboots later, then I have to repatch.

Bod when your Cache drops to zero don't you have to repatch before playing too?

BodMaster

Nope mines always at 0, as I clear my caches daily, due to my phone having so little memory.

Here's mine for SL, (Saved to SD)

No this on my phone which I only use on wifi. Now I will look into these apps and tell you which is causing a problem. Usually its an app.

bronislav84
11-17-2011, 08:23 PM
So then Bod you re-patch daily by choice? Mines drops to zero without any action on my part, almost daily. Depending on how often I reboot. Until recently it used to hold the cache between reboots.

J your interface looks like it's not 2.3.4. My 2.3.4 is black like Bod's. If it's not a tablet, then is it a custom root ROM?

On a phone without any apps other than PL and the defaults, I'm getting the same problem. It started at the same patch too.

No mine don't re-patch at all when logging in, until a patch is released but otherwise logs straight in with no problem at all :/

Well I looked into the apps. Well the free ones. Now if I may, tell me do any of your apps(dl'd ones) give you the option to automatically clear cache, or clear cache on the push of a button?

bronislav84
11-17-2011, 11:42 PM
Nope they don't. Auto clear cache on all apps is as far as I know a root app only feature.

Most of my apps clear cache on reboot. STS apps NEVER used to do that until that patch. The forum app also seems to be affected. It's bugged and caches images into Data, making the app size grow exponentially, but that just needs to be reset once in a while. Anyway the STS forum app's cache (dunno what it puts three since all the images go into data) seems to be clearing on reboot now too, and it didn't used to do that.

bronislav84

Yup like that, although my phone allows me to delete the data and yours doesn't seem to have a clear data button (Logs me out, but shrinks the app size). Anyway the forum app's cache seems to be resetting lately too. Before it used to keep cache between reboots, too.

Seriously what Android is that? Definitely not Gingerbread. Mine looks like Bod's.

My phone isn't rooted lol. Yes some apps give me the choice to clear data, others don't. I have the Garminfone. It's decent, it's not the phone I use everyday tho. I use a Metro phone now, not a smartphone or anything just "regular". Haha

I have the Garminfone.

:O

Never heard of it :/ checked my mobile bible, and it has a nifty 4GB of internal memory which is pretty cool ;)

Mine's soooo low :( about 50-100 MB of 'usuable' internal space :'(

bronislav84
11-18-2011, 10:53 AM
That is quite sweet. Mine has 1gig and getting full cause of one game. Princess Punt puts all their patches in the Data, which cannot be moved to SD, and takes up like 80mb now combined. Love the game, but might need to uninstall it when I finish the free content (They just made areas 3 and 4 free recently) cause compared to even PL/SL the game is huge cause of it's data. Google it guys. It ain't bad. Think Angry Birds but with RPG elements, a story, and a princess who likes to kick people.

Oops, sorry, bron! I don't have any issues. It loads up fine with no patching, except when one is pushed out.

I dunno where they go. :) I would assume so, as patches replace bits of code, and become part of the actual program.

Yes, but the only problem is that STS app gets loads of data. It really goes by quickly. I believe this version was one of the first ones. Although I don't think that's the problem. Maybe it's a problem with the app itself?

@Bron
On your phone it's different. Clearing cache after every couple of reboots? Weird. I don't have this problem because I rarely reboot my phone. It's always on. ;) Do your other apps get their cache cleared also?

javier995
11-19-2011, 02:12 AM
Got it! Now do you have any apps thays give you the exact (or close to exact) memory you have on your phone?

For example I use this app and it help me keep track of my memory issues.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb418/javier995/Screenshot-1321686892989.png

As you can see I am low on memory. This app lets me clear a whole bunch of stuff at a push of a button. This app is very accurate, in my opinion. I would like you to get this app and tell me what memory it says you have.

bronislav84
11-19-2011, 05:27 PM
Got what?

Anyway they have started to. STS forum app stared doing it recently too, where it would keep a cache between reboots before. I dunno what goes in there, since I know it keeps images in the app data and not the cache. Gotta clear the app data every once in a while. I clear it around 50mb.

Rebooted recently. SL cleared cache and PL didn't.

Btw keeping your device on all the time is bad dude. You should reboot every once in a while, even with a task killer.

The running tab on apps says 217 used and 354mb free.

I really don't care what happens to this phone, since I only use it to play SL and PL. Now tell me, what's the amount of memory you have left? It just sounds like you have low memory.

It's on the bottom of that post dude.

BTW I recently uninstalled a big game, Princess Punt mentioned above, after finishing all the free content. At this point I'm hoping this bug does turn out being a device thing, as it seems STS might not be able to do anything.

Anyway I think it might be some sort of, let's call it a defensive measure on my phone, where it starts to clear caches if internal memory is low. Will get back to you after next reboot on how it went.

Ok an update on this.

Seems to be a device thing after all. When internal space gets low (for my phone low is around 140mb), the phone ceases to keep even caches that aren't supposed to be cleared on reboot, like STS games which are meant to keep their caches. Rebooted two times recently and had cache for both games both times.

Dunno if this is for all devices or just some. Would be nice if the Devs could program their games to override this defensive mechanism and always keep cache until cleared manually?

Nice now we know the problem. Its not all devices because my phone doesn't do that, so it must be some. I don't think devs can overwrite this bc its just a phone problem.

Sorta did and sorta didn't really.

I must watch the size of apps like this forum app, which can grow due to it's data, which can push the internal into the low zone.
