It doesn't make sense that the character just gets locked in my opinion. You collect all that gear and gold, you spend a lot of time playing, you might even spend platinum on the character and then all of that gets deleted. Like that.
The hardcore population already is way too low and this exact thing is all the more off-putting.
I like hardcore, because it actually is a challenge again, but not preserving anything of that character/journey after death is weird to me. And I think a lot of people can agree on that.
EDIT: Leveling a different class in hardcore that has a possibility to later become softcore if things go bad is way more fun to me than jumping straight into softcore.
