Really depends on what level you are playing

The formula goes X=Y+(Z(R)) where X is the amount of damage gained, Y is the additional hidden bonus from the first para gem equipped (5.0), Z is the base damage from a para gem (2.0) and R is your bonus damage in decimal form (example: 431% bonus damage = 4.31).
So to put it simply, if you had a character with 400% bonus damage and you equipped a single para gem you would gain 5.0 + 2.0 x (4) = 28 damage. However that 5.0 damage gained is only from the first para gem. Each additional para gem will only yield 2.0 damage total where the first gives 7.0 total. To calculate this just simply multiply Z by the total amount of para gems equipped using the same formula so it becomes 5.0 + (2.0 x 4)) x (4) = 52 damage.
Considering the damage gained is based off of bonus damage it's worth mentioning when you add para gems, you take away from your primary stat total which in turn reduces the total amount of damage gained. So the more para gems you have, the less and less damage you gain from them.

Very nice explanation!

Yeah. Just a single para gem is ideal. You could stack para gems but you needed something like 3:1 with eyes to keep your bonus damage up. That's why you see a para gem in combination with eyes in many pieces of gear. People started doing it just because it did work well but it originally started as a solution to losing damage gains as you stack para gems by beefing up your primary stats with the eyes to make up for the primary stat loss when you remove a primary gem and replace it with a para gem. This way you could stack 5-6 para gems and still maintain a good avarage damage gain per para gem. This was back in the day when para gems and eyes were floating around everywhere though.
