View Full Version : Age requirements for forums and Spacetime applications

It recently came to light that some people think the age limit of the forums and the game has been lowered to 9 years old. This is not true. Because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) the age limit for these forums and the games themselves (because of the chat function) is 13 years old.

Anyone under the age of 13 is prohibited by law to participate in the forums or the games. I'm sorry if there was any confusion.

Why doesn't it block it then? For instance, when someone comes and registers and puts in (an example) 12/26/1999, why doesn't it autobahn them......

Doesn't say anything about age in market, only medium maturity. P.S. I thought it was play with Anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I don't remember having to put in my age. Was just an option.

The law is the law. Technology isn't perfect and yes sometimes things do slip through the cracks but we enforce this aggressively.

And unfortunately even if it is a core user, if it comes to light that they are under 13 we have to ban them until they are old enough to participate.

They get banned. Players on the other hand are no big deal as the game is rated 9+

I don't remember having to put in my age. Was just an option.
Would you agree that it be required? It should be....

I tell people I am under 13 and over 13 because I don't want to give out any personal info, but I am over 13. (Not an adult though)

It would probably not be a good idea to tell anyone that you are under 13. Unfortunately, because of how hard it is to verify we have to take claims like that seriously and take action.

So, if someone says they are under 13 we have to take them at their word and do something about it.

Hopefully this will stop the dumbing down of the forums that's been occurring lately.

Protecting children is probably one of the intentions of the law and that is one I definitely agree with. As clean as the forums are most of the time, I can think of some instances when it would be lamentable for younger users to see poor behavior.

STS is just making everyone aware of the rules and regulations. If players who KNOW the rules still choose to engage in forum activity, then this clears STS from any legal actions.

Sad thing is there are some 10-12 y/o who are better able to handle the forums than some much older than them. :(

Wow was unaware that this was a law! Kind of crazy! My son who is 4 now and no longer plays used to play PL and was a beast o.O lol He really only use to run with his dad or I and couldn't read chat, but now he's starting to recognize words and starting to read so he is no longer allowed to play! This is an interesting point. Can a parent accompany a 12-year old? Does the law permit parental guidance?

Im not sure I agree on this one swim :-/... If there were kids running around who couldnt chat or receive chat this could ruin game... Just think of it... We would have people running around like robots not reacting to anything we say and just making everyone confused...

Then I'm thinking of chat based on age... the younger kids can't see 13+ chat and 13 can't see 18+ chat but people under 13 could have a safe chat. And they could have common used words if they want it really safe.
