They did not 'disappear' - he traded/gifted them. If he can't remember who he gave them to and needs to, he can contact support.

Devs are the gods in here, they all have the data of trades or chat or any for sure they can tell if its true or not.

As much as i feel your pain, its not the first time changes have been made where the player is affected

Many people bought Zhulong just for the aura in town and it was removed. Prior notice or no notice made no difference as we cant have it back in egg form

We did not get a refund or re-egg and some lost just as much as you did. Its harsh but they will do what they feel is best for the game. We either accept it and continue playing or disagree and move on
