Don't buy a package of dough that you just have to bake, mix some real ingredients. If your chocolate chip cookies get hard, then try a different recipe. If your cookies get too flat, add a little more flour.

I hate it when I go to a bake sale and all the cookies taste bad. Learn to cook!

EDIT: Also, sift together your dry ingredients a few times before mixing them into the batter. I use two bowls and sift back and forth about 4 times.
