Supply and demand. Common sense whispers to me that new items such as more arcanes, tainted sets and endless sets enter the game. People would like to awake them, they buy gems and awaken their armors using thousands of gems. Price of gems increase due to the supply going down and demand going up.

16k is pretty cheap, these usually goes up to 40k each if there's no announcement of another 8k sale
