I've seen an increasing number of people claiming they can "double your money" and maybe it's the same guy with different toons

I know it's not a direct scam because really you can't just assume even if it's very possible.

Maybe someone's nice?

Here's a way to test them. Show them how much money you have WITHOUT TRADING! Then ask them to show the money he claims to have on the auction window.
If he's a scammer: "I left it at the stash", "Ugh lag", he tries to accept the trade with no money, and "<Insert lame excuse for not showing the money>"
If he isn't: "Here it is!" *inserts money*

These are players attempting to scam you. Report it. Ignore it. Avoid it.

It is a scam. There is no "double your money". Use the report functionality to report them so our Customer Support Team can ban them, put them on your mute/ignore and get back to having fun!
