Energy fills up when you level. Try to empty energy just before leveling.
Alternatively: have 2+ toons to alternate.

Since the increase in energy drops I can make 2x as many runs as I was able to prior to that. The thing that really eats it up is when you need to waste 8 energy on a 3 second cut seen... Sucks

The energy system doesn't bother me at all :-)
Especially with all the energy drops.
It totally gives you your fix with a reasonable amount of runs when its over.
