Weapon effects?

While I was playing and chopping down hordes of hunters I noticed that they were freezing after I hit them a couple of times. The weapon I was using was the lv9 pink butchers knives (forgot name). I dont if its the weapons or combination of gems, but if you know I would appreciate it if you would comment
