What is red circle on mission icon?

What does the red circle mean that appears on mission icons? It seems to appear randomly. I have played the missions expecting something different but haven't noticed anything special. I apologize if this has already been answered, but I searched and couldn't find.:witless:

When someone on your friends list is in a 3D mission, the game notifies you on the map screen by showing you a circle with the social icon with the 3D mission icon.
