I'm new, and apparently already screwed up the game :(

i was having fun, then i got to The Outskirts, and had a quest that has a 24 hour timer. i can't go any further until tomorrow this time. is that normal? did i break something?

Lol, that is normal. You will encounter more quests with long timers further on in the other campaigns. :) just repeat other quests to gain more xp while you wait. Or try out pvp. :)

You CAN move forward; You just cannot move to the next segment of map.

However, as stated when you neared completion of your first map, you can repeat ANY mission you have unlocked. Moreover, if you tap the dungeon rewards, you will see that the rewards have changed in level as you have leveled up. Replay the areas you have already opened. There is no mistake.

FYI, someone has already stated that he will be leveling on just the 1st segment of the 1st campaign map...

Yeah the 24hr timers are as long as it will go, it is a normal timer.
