Damn that's nice Red, love detail in the body structure. I'm guessing it's some kind of phoenix?

If I had to guess how you did that...I'd say you freehand draw the bird first, like did the boundaries and a rough design of what it would look like. Then you took smoke brushes and followed the lining of the bird's wings, erasing parts that went out too far and layering them over inside the bird to create the image of an actual physical structure. It then looks like you went to town with some smudge brushes and the blur tool to give depth to the smoke and give the effect that smoke isn't continuous and will eventually fade off. I did something like this once turning a picture of my face into a fireball/smoke turned into flames. Didn't come out this good though :(.

Briefly summarized, it looks like you did a lot of freehand drawing for the bird itself, which is crazy impressive. If you didn't use any smoke brushes at all and drew every part of this design...then color me jealous because that would be amazing.

If I didn't dislike tattoos I would buy this one. :O but I plainly don't like them. I think I'll grow up never liking them. But I still love the designs :3

Yep flow you got my process right :).
It was all freehand and I did use smoke brushes. I didn't use the eraser though. I seldom use it unless I'm doing human pieces or cartoon characters. I cleaned the edges with the blend tools when I paint animals. And yes, it's a Phoenix :)

wow you must have spent some time picking out the right placement for the smoke brushes then :O
I get lazy sometimes and just kind of throw smoke in the general direction I want, then go back with smoke erasers and clean it up.

Is this the finished design?

Thanks rinz! And yea that's the finished product. He has a tatto of his name going downhis arm and this phoenix is going on the back of that arm, with the wings wrapping around and stopping at both sides of his name. I'll be placing the tattoo on his arm through photoshop on my iPad an posting the pictures here for you guys after :)

Tattoos are usually done with a stencil. He'd just have to bring in a picture and they print it out on transfer paper and put it on your skin.
Then they just trace it and do the shading/coloring by hand. They don't let just anyone tattoo people at a good shop lol :p

Ahh haha so it's more complicated than just "drawing" it on them?

completely the opposite. Drawing freehand is 100 times more difficult than tracing something that was already drawn. You can erase a drawing in pencil or on a computer...you can't erase tattoo ink.

Nice art man, the client should be happy. I love tattoos, its personalized art that is paid for and sat for once and is yours forever. No one can steal it, you can't lose it or sell it.

Cool freehand. Pertaining to the rest of ur drawings, Do u do most on an iPad correct? I use a bamboo tab works well. (my str sub was hand drawn though).

ATM I do. The nib of my stylus is wearing in tearing so I have to order yet another one :( I'm considering investing in the $100 iPen, but not all apps support it
