I understand what you're trying to do and I think it's a great idea.
I've seen players host helpfulness contests like these sometimes during Christmas.
What you should do is accept votes for people via PM instead of having them post on a thread for confidentiality reasons, as well as post restrictions on how many posts a player needs to have to be able to vote.
