I see people talking about how to allocate their skill points to be a Mage, or a Palladin(?) etc. What are the differences? Does one heal less and engage in battles more? Just wondering. I'm guessing which one you want to be will also determine the spells that you max out at 5.

For mages, currently putting points in Int really doesn't do much of anything for you, though this may change to a degree when the attribute-level-skill-conversion-thingy comes which may be 1.31. Anyway, largely for this reason, Dex mages, and Str mages are more popular (and better) than Int mages. How you play is really still up to you, but yes, a paladin has better armor and can engage in melee combat (though they still don't have the skills to be a proper tank), and bowchantresses can be effective DPS, and augment that with healing, buffs, AOE, etc. The skills you choose should be roughly the same though, particularly at high levels where everyone has nearly every skill.
