How does the Legendary Mount Fang item system works?

I have a question guys.. Well you know the question based on the title. I was on a quest for to kill Duke Edward and when I got there, Duke Edward was almost dead, so I tried to help out but when I "touched" Duke Edward to help kill him, he was already dead and I got a pink?! Idk how the Legendary item drop system works but can someone tell me? Debs,mods?

you could sit back and watch your team kill boss and still get a pink
