So, I heard a few people talking about if you bought one of the maps before it was free, you got the Shield of Gratitude. I was wondering if this was true, and if so I bought the SSC map and Wyldwood awhile before they were free and I never got a SoG... So should I email STS and ask for one, or is there no chance of getting it now?

I think it was if you bought the main maps before they where free you got it, for buying those maps you got the helm of gratitude.

It was awarded to those who bought the main spine campaigns before they went free. (Excluding Wyldwood, SSC, Skellar, Nightmares, etc.).
