Any idea what does the pet icon does on screen? To cause it to attack or use its arcane ability?

The pet icon uses its arcane ability. Depending on your pets ability , what it does can vary.

To be precise, it does not "vary" the attack button is the attack button that inflicts damage on a single target.

Not really , if you have a pets arcane ability is to heal such as Barney ( from quest ) then that button heals you. So I stand by the yes it does vary , same goes for nexus ( plat ) which restores mana.
