You don't always get an egg. It's random luck. You mostly get potions and elixirs. If lucky, you get an egg.

On Friday, I got a 60 minute combo elixir. Didn't have much time to play over the weekend, but while on combo elixir, I got Frost, Flounder and a Jahooty egg - along with speed and damage reduction elixirs.

I'm sure it's just coincidence, but it's strange that the only time I've received eggs from him were when I was on a combo elixir.
