The feed button has a picture of a dog biscuit on it, but all we ever feed our pets is gold coins. No wonder they don't stay happy very long! Lol.
What if there were pet treats added to the game? This would replace feeding them gold and instead they would consume the treats. The treats could be purchased from a pet supplies NPC, found in towns as well as in guild halls at a discounted price. They could also have a chance to drop from barrels, because those pesky goblins are always stealing our pet treats.
There could be different qualities of food, each replenishing different amounts of happiness. Common fills up 1/4th of the pets happiness, rare fills up 1/2, and epic fills up the full bar. If you have auto-feed turned on, the pet will automatically eat the highest quality food available in your inventory. If not, then tapping the feed button (or the frowny face where the arcane ability usually is) a menu pops up with the three different qualities of food in a button list along with a number next to each showing how many you have.
No legendary quality food, you may ask? Of course! A legendary pet treat can be purchased exclusively with platinum, and this treat is not consumed. Characters with this in their inventory essentially have a never ending supply of treats. The Everlasting Pet Treat!
But why stop there? Why have a pet supplies vendor who only sells food? The new pet supplies vendors can also sell power treats, which are essentially like elixirs for pets. Each kind will put a timed buff on your pet that only ticks down when in combat areas. Some ideas for power treats could be basic stuff like increased damage, Crit chance, or running speed. But how about some more unique ideas, like a vampiric treat that allows the pet to leech health from the monster and give it to you with each bite? Or how about frozen and molten treats that provide your pet with chilling (makes monsters move slow) and burning (deals periodic damage over time) auras around them? Or perhaps treats to give it healing and mana regen auras.
These power treats would function just like elixirs, in that they would cost platinum to purchase. And maybe the next ally that gets added to the game would give out power treats, rather than elixirs.
Just some thoughts.
