Mage enemy bug?

Not sure if this is a bug, I noticed it in AO2, but it also happens in swamps. Staff wielding enemies shoot their weapons as if they were a combat cane, or a hook staff. I don't think they did this outside of the aliens in AO2, but the gray crocs in the swamps do it as well, I am not sure if the enemies in other campaigns do it as well.

Oh nonono it's not a bug at all.

Picture someone wielding a staff and charging up for a powerful attack. With that powerful attack centered in the staff, you use the staff by throwing it (like the combat cane) and the powerful attack gets catapulted to the enemy
