This is my story for a contest for an FPS called Blacklight:Retribution. Let me know what you think.
The Story of Aaron Telfair
As he lied down hidden under the cover of darkness, he watched as the battery levels of his blackout slowly drain, he knew soon he will have to move. He was a Blacklight soldier, the best in the world at eliminating a target. He had joined Blacklight a year earlier and had been through the training area at least 500 times since then. Ever since Spade had called him the Rookie it stuck and that was his code name much to his disappointment. He was on his first mission, a simple mission...Infiltrate the Claw's hideout and find out why several U.S. civilians had disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The last thing he wanted to do was screw it up and fail, but, how could he fail? After the several months of rigorous training not to mention the years he spent in the army before he was contacted by Blacklight. He could not fail, he WOULD not fail. He was strong mentally and physically. Bloodshed did not concern him he took orders and obeyed. He was an elite. He was...Aaron Telfair.
Aaron stood up and used his healing injector, he was hurt...bad. He made it off better than some of the others in their company...2 had died in the helicopter crash. It was him, Spade, and Buck. He had no idea how they found out they were coming, but it didn't matter anymore...they just had to survive and complete the mission.
He helped Spade and Buck up and gave them a hit of the healing injector. "Ugghh." said Spade, " I think my arm is broken". Spade was tall and skinny, but, pure muscle. He was an excellent sniper. "We need to move." said Buck. Buck was a gargantuan muscle man. A freak of nature. He was a heavy weapons specialist. "Alright guys, chill out. We need to make it out of here alive" said Aaron. "Give me more of that healing injector my arm still hurts" said Spade. "Forget that thing and let's get going" said Buck.
Buck picked up his rocket launcher and slung his flamethrower across his back, "I think I lost my sniper" said Spade. "It's right there now let's move!" said Buck. "Bad news guys..." said Aaron "the blackout just went out, we have probably about 15 seconds before the-" he was cut short as a frag grenade went off 50 feet to their left. "Time to go!" said Buck as he shoved Aaron and Spade around a building to the right. "I need my sniper!" said Spade as he was roughly shoved by Buck, "No time" said Buck, "We have to get out of here NOW! Aaron pop up your HRV and see how many of Claw's men are around us." "Roger that" said Aaron as he popped up his HRV "Looks like about 20 guys and more coming...there is a building we could hold up in, we have a few minutes at the max...it's at about 2 O'clock." "Let's go for it then." said Spade heading toward the building "looks like the best chance we have of surviving right now..."
As bullets flew around them they made it to the building. They bolted the door and Spade placed a proximity mine down next to the door. "What do we do now?" said Aaron panting from their brief escape. "Spade, get the Commander up on Video display. We need confirmation on what to do next before it's too late." Spade quickly established a video link back to HQ. The face of an angry, red-faced Commander popped up on each of their displays. "What happened out there!?" said the Commander. "Sir, they knew we were coming. They shot down our helicopter and are pursuing us as we speak. Only me, Spade, and the Rookie survived. We need orders on whether or not to proceed with the mission." said Buck. They could hear a sigh over the video link. "It's no use now, Claw knows you are there and has most certainly ditched his hideout..." said the Commander "abort mission and get out of there...if you can. I'll have a helicopter waiting for you at data-point Alpha."
Spade turned the video link off. "Well, what now?" said Aaron. Buck took off his severely damaged helmet, grabbed his lucky cigar that he had been saving for just such an occasion as this, and lit it using his flamethrower. "Now..." said Buck blowing a puff of smoke "we go kick some butt and get out of here alive..."
They heard the tremendous bang as the door was broken down and the proximity mine went off mingled with the shouts of men as the proximity mine killed a couple of them. They rushed out the back door. "Looks like data-point Alpha is about 500 yards at 4 O'clock" said Aaron "Oh, and there is a squad moving in on us from the left". "Gee, thanks for letting us know Rook" said Spade as he rolled his eyes. They moved into Bravo formation, Aaron had practiced this hundreds of times, but never in a real fire fight. "Aaron you cover left, Spade you got middle, and i'll get right." They fought like their life depended on it...because it did. Bullets flew around them and an incendiary round hit Aaron in the shoulder. "Ahhggg, My shoulder!" He popped his shoulder pad off and looked at the slightly charred skin as he injected himself with the healing injector. He could feel the exobytes flow through his blood system and heal his skin. When he looked up one of Claw's soldiers knocked him over and held a machete high to strike his neck.
---
Two men sat in an office a top New York City's sky line. The shadows enveloped them, but you could notice the men had been through several firefights. The man on the left had a scar running down his right check and neck it disappeared under the folds of his dress shirt. The second man had been severely burned. The back of his head had no hair on it. Where the hair should have been was a brutal burn etched across the back of his head. "Do you think we made the right choice?" said Scar face in a gruff voice, "Putting a rookie in that situation, even after all that extra training we put him through, isn't a good idea.". "You know it had to be done." said the burnt man "We had to see how the infusion would work". For years Blacklight had been working on an infusion system to give their soldiers an even bigger advantage in war. It contained several newly discovered hormones that enhanced the human's senses. It had been infused into Aaron Telfair's DNA unbeknownst to him. Blacklight hadn't had a rookie in 2 years, so when the Blacklight scientists heard about Aaron joining Blacklight they jumped at the chance to finally test their discoveries on a human. "I just hope it works..." said Scar face tracing his scar with his finger...
---
A bullet penetrated the armor of the soldier and he fell dropping his machete. Spade held out a hand and helped up Aaron up "You're lucky I was there to hel-" A bullet whined through the air as it penetrated Spade's helmet. Blood spurted from Spade's helmet as he fell. "No!" said Aaron as he took off Spade's helmet. "M-m-make it back...*gasp*...make it b-back for me. It's b-been a good f-f-fight. Good luck R-Rook." Spade took his last breath and...smiled. Fueled with what he thought was adreneline he turned his HRV on and looked around for the killer...He saw a lone figure standing on a building a hundred yards away. Adrenaline coursed through his body as he loaded a round into his revolver. One round. Sniper versus revolver at a hundred yards...Two shots rang out. The man on the building fell, Aaron had shot him in the head and the sniper's bullet whistled through air as it passed not 3 inches from Aaron's head. "Hey!" said Buck "What happened over he-" He stopped short as he saw Spade's body. "What happened..." said Buck. "He...he saved my life." said Aaron his voice waivering, "One of Claw's men knocked me down and was about to slit my throat. Spade shot him and after he helped me up...a sniper...shot him" Aaron choked. "He won't receive a proper soldier's burial, but when we get back he will be mentioned and given a proper ceremony of honor." said Buck, "Come on Rook...let's go."
---
Scar Face's phone buzzed. He picked it up, looked at the screen, and sighed...It was the Commander. "Yes sir?" said Scar Face. "I need you at room 147 at the Blacklight Hospital in an hour" said the Commander...*click* "Great...he hung up...This better not be anything major." said Scar Face under his breath.
---
They were 175 feet away from data-point Alpha when a group of soldiers converged on them. They were SO close, they couldn't fail this close to freedom..."Rook!" said Buck as bullets flew around them "let's run for it!". "Roger that Buck!" said Aaron as he started sprinting toward the helicopter. It was a dangerous move...very dangerous. They were running and gunning. A rocket flew towards the helicopter and missed it...barely. There were too many men and the helicopter would surely be shot down if someone didn't stay and protect the lift-off. Buck knew this..."Rook!" said Buck, "Get to the helicopter...i'm staying!". "What are you insane Buck?!" said Aaron "BOTH of us are going to survive this!". "No! Don't you see Rook?" said Buck grunting as a bullet hit his leg "The helicopter will be shot down if I don't stay!". "B-b-but" stammered Aaron. "Go!" said Buck as he was swallowed by troops of Claw's men "It's been an honor fighting by your side Rook."
Aaron had stumbled into the helicopter dazed and stunned by the events he had just witnessed. He remembered the medics asking him something, something about his health...Then he faded into unconsciousness. He woke up in a white room the glare of a florescent light stung his eyes as he blinked. He heard someone distantly say, "Ah, he's awake sir..." "Thank you now leave us alone" said another voice, "Yes, sir." said the first voice. Aaron heard the door creak on its hinges and close. "Aaron Telfair...can you hear me?" said the man. Aaron opened his eyes. The man standing next to his bed was dressed in a business suit with a dark, black tie. Aaron noticed a scar running from his cheek down to his neck. "You should be dead right now." said the Scar faced man "They removed 12 bullets out of your body" Aaron coughed and managed to rasp out, "Well, why am I still alive then?". "That...is a long story" said Scar face. "I have time" said Aaron coughing. The scar faced man didn't speak for several moments...Then he said, "I suppose you do deserve to know..." He went on to tell him about his DNA being infused with the hormones and his body being more durable...Aaron faded in and out of consciousness as the man went on for hours describing how the procedure was made and how his DNA was changed for forever...a super human...that's what he called Aaron...
"We will have to wipe your memory" said Scar Face. "Fine" said Aaron grimacing, "I would rather die than remember what happened on that mission..." "Good, we will make the proper preparations." said Scar Face as he walked out the door.
Aaron Telfair sat down in a chair on his balcony in Maui. He had lived a good life, he thought. He was rich and retired. "There it is again" he thought. Ever since his memory had been wiped Aaron had experienced a feeling that he couldn't quite describe..."It's like almost finishing a puzzle, but, you can't find the last puzzle piece." he thought. He gazed out at the beautiful sunset on the beach. Then it hit him, like a train smashing into his chest at 200 miles per hour...Aaron remembered. Not all of it...no not all of it. Images flashed through his head. Spade falling as blood spurted from his helmet. Buck giving him that last smile as he dove into the ranks of enemy soldiers. "They risked their lives to save me" he thought. Me...the Rook. As Aaron Telfair wept angry, bitter tears...One thing was emblazoned upon his mind...revenge
