Weapons already do have special attacks. Some weapons have procs, which here are some off the top of my head.

Bleed- I think it gives added damage, not sure
Lightning- Weakens armor
Fire- Gives delayed added damage
Freeze- Freezes the enemy
Break armor- Breaks armor
Nightmare- Weakens armor
Stun- Stuns the opponent

I am pretty sure I forgot a few though.

Bleed actually makes target slowly lose hp over a period of time. In PvP, if a player dies from bleeding, no kill is awarded, nor are you penalized with a death. Just a fun fact. :-)

well I'm such a newb...i've been playing quite a while now and didn't know the weapons such as spears, plasma swords had its own unique ability..i thought those lighting from plasma swords were just for show..since mostly mmo's i play before, you kinda had to manually activate a weapon's spec by clicking something
