A reputation system would provide an incentive for players to be helpful and nice to the community.

Possibly, but just like with forums a few problems would arise:

1. People trying too hard and not giving out correct advice.
2. A rise in policing which leads to a rise in arguments.
3. Players using alternate accounts to raise a "trust" level then use this for scamming.
