When you get a thanks, you get two rep points. However, when you get a thumps-up (to the right of the thanks button), you get more than two rep points if I'm not mistaken. The amount of rep points you get from a thumbs-up varies depending on how much rep power the person who gave the thumbs-up has. At least that's how I understood it.

I'm not certain if it's just reputation or reputation + post count, but I know reputation plays a role in it.
