it sucks that I spent so much platinum on unlocking all the areas back in 2010 --- and now that I started playing again I notice all the areas are free???

Yeah that changed happened about 2 years ago roughly.
If you bought them all you should have been granted a vanity called the Shield of Gratitude which can be found in your stash.
