This thread provides an unofficial timeline of the dates of important events published in
Pocket Legends, from the beginning (in this case the release) until today.


If you have any questions, or if you have other suggestions for improvement, or if you found any errors in this timeline please write it down here or drop me a PM with the subject '' timeline PL '' I'm always open to criticism and Suggestions.
If you think a particular update is still important and should be bold and underlined, write it down and I will change it immediately.
Feel free to discuss here, just be kind to each other and don't bring the thread off topic, that would mean a lot to me. ;)
I will definitely update this timeline, I have decided to update it every Sunday, as long as there are updates ingame of course.
I probably will not cause every now and then to always come on time to update due between events, etc., but what is certain that I WILL update this thread.

after cumulative 14hours the final result:
A 50 kb file with
~7,000 words over 36 pages,
~33,000 characters without space.
AL's and SL's only have over 3,000 words and DL's even only 2,000.

Trend-wise, it would seem that there was a significant drop in the number of updates since late 2012. I suspect that it coincides with the rise of AL, the loss of many of the oldies, and the newer games being released.

indeed the release of AL and BD could be, or are the major reasons why PL, SL and DL are getting less updates.
Apollo and Fusionstrike threw up flawless theories, well 5 months ago (but i think they're still up to date) here:


I just wanted to add on one more teeny thing.

If players look at the other 3 threads he has made for AL, DL, & SL, they can see that during the incubation period of each game, the expansion caps were short. They were around 2-3 expansions each with 1 to 2 month intervals.

Thus, as you can see. AL is getting the same treatment that PL got during it's incubation period. SL got the same special treatment during it's incubation period as well. DL did as well, albiet its new caps were a little bit longer between raises and it had 1-2 less cap raises for it's incubation period compared to the rest of the game.

This, I blame on two things:

First off, DL was using STS's upgraded engine, which I'm sure took the developers a little more time to get used to & code, as it had to be more complicated. Again, this is just a hypothesis, so feel free to disagree with me.

Secondly, AL came out pretty quickly after DL. People were very surprised as to how short of a period AL came after DL. This, and AL's popular take off caused DL to get the short end of the stick in terms of campaign increases and the frequency of campaign increases.


This is very intersting data, and a good way to put things into perspective. Thanks to Doc for doing the research (so we don't have to). A few thoughts that struck me.

1. There is undeniably a difference between the attention a new game gets vs. a well-established one like PL. Several have pointed this out already. We do need to manage our expectations about how often we'll see new content added to this very mature game and not get too caught up in comparing with AL's level of attention. The two games are not comparable in terms of their maturity level.

2. Having said that, we are certainly going to break new ground in PL as far as length of time between content updates. Why do I say that? Well, the data shows we're about a month away from the historical maximum time between caps, and we haven't heard a thing from STS about the next update. If you look at the history, especially the history of the last year or so of PL, STS tends to announce updates to PL many weeks before they happen. In general, we get our first hint 4-6 weeks before it's actually put into the game, with some other teaser posts leading up to the release. Since we haven't heard anything at all, I don't see any chance that a content update will happen in the next month. Therefore, I feel safe predicting that the time between updates for whatever PL eventually gets will end up being longer than the longest wait to date.

At this point, I sincerely hope STS plans on giving us some kind of official update of their plans for PL in the next month. If May comes and goes and they're still silent, we'll have passed the longest wait in PL history without a peep. That would be when I would seriously start wondering if PL has been completely abandoned. Actually, people thinking that now wouldn't be completely unjustified in my view. I'm not trying to be alarmist, and I tend to think it's not that case that PL is over, but every day of complete silence from STS makes it that much harder to have faith that patience will be rewarded.

Hmm with the latest engine I (personally) understand that Skills can be charged as example and such - I wouldn't like ''such'' a PL imo.

Hmm ... well, we have to factor in the age of PL, so it will only generate a fraction of what AL generated. What we need is a downloads by date analysis and more accurate numbers than the broad ranges. Of course, none of this takes into account the iOS downloads, which is another limitation of my analysis, but I imagine the ratios would be comparable.

Is it possible to change an existing engine for a game, or do you simply have to re-create that game if you want to use a new engine? Because it many recent posts, STS/STG Devs have made the claim that PL can't make many of its requested suggestions and implementations due to not having the right engine. AL contains things that PL users want, but we can't get them because we don't have the right engine. Therefore, I assumed that PL can no longer be updated unless they were to literally make a new Pocket Legends, but just on a different engine.

Or perhaps I'm wrong, and implementing the engine they're using for AL simply costs too much time and money to invest in PL (STS could end up losing money by attempting to invest in a game with fewer players)?

Ok a couple of things. First, before I answer the question, I do need to say this. I am not a programmer by trade (more of a hardware kind of guy). But let me put it this way, I do have a lot more knowledge about computer programming than most people so I do feel qualified to give an answer. I also know quite a few people in the software industry. Whenever you build a computer game, the gaming engine is the core of the game. It is responsible for things like rendering the physics, programming the sound (and things like collision detection), along with the under the hood stuff (like memory allocation, threading), and sometimes even the AI.

The answer, is that it really depends on how close the AL engine is to the PL engine. I suspect though that it would require a moderate overhaul. The same fundamental engine seems to be driving the game, at least looking at AL superficially (devs correct me on this one of I am wrong), but I suspect that there have been changes underneath. This is the publicly available info about the Spacetime Engine (http://www.spacetimestudios.com/content.php?5-Tech) and there have been later revisions (http://www.spacetimestudios.com/showthread.php?70041-Keeping-Pace-with-Technology).





I guess what I'm asking is:

Totally agree with this, Spacetime was ahead of the game IMO when they made Pocket Legends, the upgrades they made in Star Legends looked amazing. Dark Legends really wasn't that astounding. Arcane Legends didn't even have a rotational view, so I'm not positive how it is an advancement, I mean obviously the graphics are better, but anyways, Battle Dragons was nothing new at all.

We know the Spacetime team is small, but it is just logic you can't take on all these games at once and do justice to more than one.

I always was in the belief that they had to upgrade on Armv7 for more space for content updates or something like that.
Well, anyway, I haven't seen any outstanding update which could take benefit of the new engine in the past 8 months, be it on PL or SL which made me wonder - why in the world upgrading the engine if you don't work with it anyway?

If they all have more commonality, even if you don't use all the new features in every game, it's easier to fix/change and migrate fixes across games. I suspect this was the major driver.

In hindsight they probably wouldn't have done so if they'd known then where things would end up. It looks to me like they haven't done enough development on PL or SL to justify the investment of updating the engine. But at the time they probably thought it would pay off nicely in easier updates and bug fixes.

Well, the ARMv7 certainly suggests that as well. If they are using the same engine across the board then that means that there are no real barriers to creating new content. It would be no more difficult to create new content than in would be for AL because under the hood, it's mostly the same. What would upgrading do? Well, Fusion has already answered that question below:

This is my guess as well. Even for a smaller studio, there are economies of scale here. It also helps that all games run on the same engine - it's not like other studios that release many titles in many different genres.

I don't know how much you know about game development, but you have to understand what an undertaking a new engine would be - well, it would take years of development. The original PL engine took about $10 million (2010 USD) and 5 years to build. There are reasons why engine licensing has been enormously helpful for Indie game development these days. Unigine is a well known example as is Unity 3D. The Crytek series of engines have also been licensed to give a few examples. I wonder if the STS engine has been licensed. I'll have to look it up when I have the time.

That being said, a new engine is possible. It would involve transferring the assets over (things like gold). Other games have done it before. The big issue isn't that though - the big issue is, is the ROI going to be worth it?

In general I would agree. My point is that in this case they haven't really made any substantial updates at all on PL (new content, bug fixes, etc.) since the switchover. Therefore they haven't reaped any real benefit from switching over because they haven't done anything that benefits from the economy yet. In general, this kind of thing is the right thing to do for a development house, but you wouldn't do it for a game that you never intend to update again. To me, this shows they had plans at one point to keep updating PL, which made the investment make sense, but then changed their minds.

The issue is unchanged - does STS feel that the ROI is worth it to release new content? Even with the update, there have been no major updates. As I indicated in another thread, it's a chicken and egg kind of issue.

Well, that's to be expected. Shared game engine means that there does not have to be much testing. Truth be told, they are a small to medium sized studio - not too sure how big their QA team is (probably no more than a few members, if even that). Either that or the developers "double up" as their own coder and QA. The other thing to keep in mind is that we're talking about new content, not about something fundamentally different here, so yeah it's not going to cause instability. Maybe balance issues, but other than that, not much. Of course there have been logical errors in the past, but usually they do get fixed within the span of a week.

That's interesting too in that it does mean faster time to release (and therefore cheaper). New content probably doesn't cost that much money to develop. It's the new game making that probably soaks up the bulk of expenses, especially considering the rate that they are releasing games for a small studio.

Warrior Changes:
•Warrior has been changed compare more favorably with Enchantress and Archers (in terms of both DPS and TANKING roles).
•The Warrior's preferred offhand shield and torso armor types (chain and plate) offer more armor protection.
•Warrior characters also now have more base DPS and a higher base chance to Dodge.
•In terms of DPS: the Warrior's preferred 1h and 2h weapons have been given a significant boost in damage (but higher STR requirements to wield in some cases).
•Warrior 'Slash' abilities do a lot more damage.
•Warrior 'Rage' self-buff yields a higher DPS during the buff period.
•Warrior 'Iron Blood' provides more armor (but has a longer cool-down).

Archer Changes
•Archer ranged weapons are now significantly more powerful (especially when compared with daggers - which were dramatically over-powered).
•Crossbow weapons do significantly more damage per shot. Bows, crossbows and auto-crossbows are the top-tier for ranged damage-dealing.
•Talon Spike weapons do more damage per hit (compared to previous iteration) but not as much as daggers to balance the fact that Talons are ranged / daggers are melee.
•Dagger attack period increased to bring DPS in range with other class' melee weaponry.
•Daggers now get a 'bleed' effect (drains target health over time, stacks) that can hasten an enemy's demise - to make up for the DPS nerf.

Enchantress Changes:
•Enchantress' preferred weapons are now more powerful.
•All 2h Magestaff weapon damage increased to make 2h staff mages more about DPS.
•All 1h Wand weapon damage decreased to balance with off-hand shield / mage-tanking.

System changes:

Huge update in the Timeline, I found the correct update threads for the time span between May 2010 and February 2011 and updated these. I will contain a Spoiler file with these ancient updates in a second post for everyone who is interested.

There were so many missing updates in my Timeline before. Now the Timeline is way more accurate and has the exact dates of each update.

The amount of the missing updates was so huge it bumped the total update count to 350 and the average update per month to over 7 - which is a little inaccurate nowadays.

Also, updated the Timeline, Charts and Trivia since January 2014.

+ You can now preview your attribute point spending before you commit to the changes. + Minimum and maximum values for direct damage (and healing) skills are now driven by an expression that takes one or more character statistics into account.
+ For example - the amount of damage done by the Archer's "Blast Shot" is now affected by both the skill rank and by the amount of Dexterity the Archer possesses. The more dexterity, the higher the minimum and maximum damage values for this skill.

- Enchantress "Nightmare" now also reduces targets' chance to hit
- Enchantress "Weakness" now also reduces targets' chance to dodge
- Archer "Root" skills reduce target chance to dodge
- Archer "Shattering Scream" skill now also reduces target armor
- Warrior "Crushing Blow" now also reduces target chance to dodge

Like most other debuffs, the debuffs associated with each of these skills increases with Rank :)
+ Some additional Vendors have come for a brief visit! Ace Avian vendors "Vai" and "Ryom" have come to visit "Oz" in Forest Haven Towne. They sell weapons and armor for high-level Characters - and are planning to stay with Oz and his wife for the next few weeks (or until he throws them out on their butts).
+ "Oz" just got a shipment of high-level variations of 'custom' armors. Check out the Level 32 and Level 34 variations of Rainbow, Shooting Star and Warlord armor!
+ Added more items to the Upgrades store! Check out Level 30 - 35 "Frost" "Fire" and "Nature" armors, as well as flaming moon axes, lightning bolt staves and darkbolt weapons.
+ "Warlord" "Rainbow" and "Shooting Star" armors (with much better stats) can now be purchased with Platinum! These armors are for Levels 33 and 35 only.

+ Merged Alterra and Fnord servers. If your Fnord character doesn't have a name conflict with existing Alterra characters, you will get to keep the name. If your character does have a name conflict, we will rename your character to Charactername-Fnord and you will receive a free character rename. Everything will merge additively, and will do so as though you had an account on both realms even if you didn't. That means everyone that started before the merge occurs will have at least 4 character slots (plus any amounts purchased on either realm), at least 10 stash slots (plus purchased), sum of respecs available, and all characters, inventory, friends, ignores, stashed items, etc from both realms. + Prohibit trade of items that shouldn't be tradable
+ PvP respawn now chooses respawn point with fewest number of nearby enemy players
+ Added two new self-buffs to the Enchantress' "Blessings" that should help survivability and damage a lot in PvP. "Blessing of Vitality" now gives the Enchantress caster a high degree of armor protection (8 to 32 points) for a short period (12 sec). Additionally the "Blessing of Might" gives the Enchantress caster an increase to damage (5 to 25 points) and to critical hit chance (10 to 50%) for twenty seconds. Buffs for both blessings increase per rank. The party buff aspect has not been modified ;)
+ Added several more epic and legendary helms to "Fathom Crypt" and "Lost Expedition" boss loot tables.
+ iPad: made "Inspect other avatar" and "Give" pages consistent with iPhone version. (all stats are shown)

Systems
+ PvP - You can now play against other players in Team Deathmatch arenas. Upon joining an arena, choose a side and battle the other team. A player death is a point for the other team. When you reach the score limit, the game ends and match standings are displayed. Arenas will have varying sizes, player limits, and optional powerups.
+ Secure Trade - You can now trade items, gold, and potions securely with another player. To initiate a trade, inspect the person you want to trade with, then switch to the 'Trade' tab. When that person inspects you and goes to the trade tab, you'll both then be able to set what items/gold/potions you want to trade, and confirm the trade when you're happy with what the other person has offered. The trade is only applied when both sides have confirmed the trade since any modifications have occurred.
+ Elixirs - You can now purchase buffs with Gold or Platinum that can temporarily enhance your character!

Additional Features
+ Chat text is now word wrapped and scrollable (up to 500 lines)
+ Added game type filter to join screen (pve, arena, towne, all) and persist all filters
+ Icons for up to 5 buffs/debuffs are now displayed for the player each party/team members
+ Visual effect for buff now stays on player as long as the buff is applied

Bug Fixes
+ Wrapped text no longer loses its colorization

+ Items are automatically unequipped, and show a system message, when their requirements are no longer met rather than equip the item but not be usable.

+ Item pack items can no longer be traded.
+ Fix colors incorrectly carrying over across newlines in some ui elements.
