I use both :D
Rod is huge dam, mutil-attack good for farm (pve)
Gun is auto-aim, fast, push back good for pvp

firebal , heal , time , gale --> That's exactly my build too :D
About choice between 'time, gale or lightning" i suggest time with "frezzee time". Not talking about damage but about the number enemy...
