Why need to read contact data on Android with the new update?

I think this is an important concern people have. Please see a flood of complaints in Android Market.

Noticed this too.. alot of unhappy folks there. That is strange though I don't see a reason for this. Hopefully someone can clear it up.

I see no reason either. STS doesn't need my contact data or my phone status & identity. I refused the update and can still log on. If this isn't fixed i'll be deleting my several accounts as well.

We do not mine, nor store your contact list. Access to the contacts list is an Android permission we must request in order to present you with a list of which contact you'd like to refer in the case of referrals for Platinum. If you don't use the referrals in the Nexus, it won't be read.

No game need my contact data. I don't like that.

We've removed the need for this permission in the latest Android client now available in the Android Market.
