If you're on android, your google play services may be stuck. You can try either force closing the app or rebooting your device.
Same has been happening ever since I started playing al in 2013 and I have reached put to support but their response was that its not a problem of theirs and had to do with google. I tried contacting google and they said its not a fault of theirs so frankly I gave up. Tried forcing closing and ALL troubleshooting methods that was suggested by support and google. The other possible cause I know if is if you're in a region where google doesn't support in app purchasing.
You could also use the webstore (paypal) instead.
