lol, its not fat. They do that when they relax. they like flatten out and look fat. But when they move and stuff it'll all suck in and they look slim and hard plus come off the ground a little.
my friend had one till it got to big for him to keep in a rental house ;/
Mate i live in Australia i see bearded dragons all the time. And that one is fat :-P

The photo was fairly late, but she wasn't in full 'pancake mode,' where she flattens out to absorb more heat. She was just being a little lump on her hammock (she has always LOVED her hammock). When she's actually up and doing stuff, she isn't as fat. Plus...ask any woman--the camera adds ten pounds, haha.
I'm sure my beardie is going to look a little more plump than a wild one, though. That's just normal for an animal with a secured food source to be fuller than one that may go extended amounts of time without a bite. Not to mention wild dragons likely eat bugs and veggies that have been in contact with pesticides, causing them to be a little sickly. Our beardie gets organic veggies only and raised crickets. ^.^
Two of the local pet stores have some HUGE bearded dragons with some serious bellies! They make ours look anorexic. lol I'll take pictures the next time we are at them (might stop tomorrow to look for new stuff for her).
You're correct. Just like most domesticated/ captive animals. We love them to "death".

And yeah mate, ik all about wild. Vs captive animals. Im actually an ecologist/zoologist. We deal alot with the captive animals at the zoo getting the proper diet and exercise. Its heaps of fun trying to find enrichment activities for elephants and the like.

Yea, fat pets are cute, but it's so bad for their health--just like it is for people. But sadly, people are too dumb to realize that. Idk why people just don't get a larger breed of dog or get a Maine coon as their cat, if they want a big pet to snuggle.
Not sure how our beardie is a little chubby. We don't give her very much fruit, only a decent amount of her pellets, 30 crickets a week, but a good amount of green veggies. Never gave her any of those crazy calorie packed giant meal worms. I heard they can eat the super small feeder mice, but my gf doesn't have the heart to, heh (which is exactly why she can't get a snake--because she thinks mice and even rats are too cute and she actually wants those, too lol).
You know any fun little activities to do with bearded dragons to get them active? Whenever she's out, she just chills...or climbs onto you and chills there. lol Doesn't play with either of our cats...one kind of avoids it and the other...they just sniff each other real quick and then just go back to their chilling.
And yea, I'm in the states. Also, I think those real big dragons are all like 5+ years old. I think two at one store are among 'not for sale' pets (they have a handful of large reptiles there that aren't for sale). They probably just grew fond of them over the years of them being their. But...they just have a life of laying around and eating. :/ Don't want our dragon to be subjected to that (even though they are known to be docile and lazy pets). Starting to take her outside for a little on the hotter days now that it's warming up. She's definitely not lazy when she has space to run!
Yea i was asking where you live bc its nice to let them run outside in an enclosed area. Just make sure you keep close eye on her or it is covered if your not there. Reason: predators. It happens.
Meal worms are ok as a treat but not diet. But if you have never given them to her i wouldnt bother.
The best thing is give her room to run and climb. I'll try to remember some things we did for our beardies, i haven't worked over in that area for while now so I'll try to dig thru my memory. Also, she not THAT fat but i Def get her some exercise lol.
I like rodents too. They are pretty cool so i can sympathize with her. Plus i feel those types of pets, ie snakes, are not good. Not all animals make for good pets. Some should be left to the wild, if not most. And i think if you are carnivorous and eat something like mice, you should work to catch and eat it, not gobble some dead one or have it dropped down ur throat. No brain stimulation in that!
