Rep is as pointless as kdr. Honestly how much do you care about numbers?
-1 bar for all of you.
This seems to have become a rep game.

Edit:
Seriously though - we as a forum need to stop trying to measure the worth of someone by the number of "rep" bars they have and rather by the quality of what they say. The fact that a person is making a thread asking how to get rep is itself a sign of how big an issue this has become; somebody's sense of self worth has become about how much rep they can get.
Zomg! I don't know why I'm sayin this
I do agree with you, although I feel that, to a certain extent, having the reputation system keeps things more-so intact (this a huge generalization). I couldn't care less about my reputation, considering I'm rarely on PL and only appreciate being part of this community, hoping to see some sort of development through the time I've invested. I only suspect those who are new to the a new virtual community would like to put their own names out to begin their own reputation. Heck, I remember playing Runescape back when I was too immature, and only wanted to become some "famous" person (nerdy, right?).
That being said, this type of system could perhaps keep newcomers (especially to a forum) from trolling, raging, and flat-out annoyance. I remember seeing all these trolls back in the days of a no-reputation system, and although, presently, the quality of posts have gone down, the quality of the overall community is at a positive level. I advocate for quality posts/threads... but it is what it is.
Fair enough. There's a tradeoff to anything in life it seems. On one hand, things like reputation do mean that senior members do get recognition through a system that players choose. On the other hand, it does mean that there will be players who wish to amass reputation for the sake of well ... massing reputation. I suppose the benefits of the reputation system in this case outweigh the drawbacks. I was not recommending a scrap of the reputation system, and I do remember back in 2011 what happened - people deducted reputation points for good posts:

Runescape - yeah it seems everyone used to be on it. I left RS after the community went south (that and hacking of RS became the status quo).
EDIT:
I do agree that the community is probably better with this system than without. I suppose we all strive to be famous at some point in our gaming careers (and I particularly emphasise the word careers given the time and emotional investment put in).
Not at all. Age is only somewhat correlated with maturity. There are people who are teenagers who have been outstanding in this community (some in this thread in fact), while there have been others who are well, much older than we would suspect. Note of course that I emphasize correlation.
That depends on how you define "reputation". Among the people who I hold in esteem, I care a great deal about my standing. However, if you define reputation by the number of "bars of reputation" that I have, then the answer is that earning these bars is not something that I feel anybody should be overly obsessed by. I go by the philosophy that if I earn reputation, great. If not, it's not something that I get worked up by.
