Mages are slaves, but so are bears, and while we're at it birds too. Mages heal, that's what they do. Heal has a fast recharge rate and if timed properly can allow every player to not have to worry about using pots and just focus on the attack. Bears tank, that's what they do. They're supposed to take aggro with their massive amounts of hp and keep the other members in the party from having to run around like an avian with it's head cut off. Birds damage, that's what they do. Use your skills, use your combos and kill bosses! If everyone plays their roles then the team functions as a unit, but if one member doesn't pull their weight you end up with birds taking aggro and dying, then mages take aggro and die, now no one can revive and you have to quit or respawn from the beginning. Fact is everyone is a slave to their role and the rest of the party places blame where they feel the group is lacking, sorry mages we can't win if we're all dead.
Being new to PL I picked the mage as my first char cause I've always loved being a magical being in every form of RPG I've ever played. :) Not knowing about the whole 'you have a role so play it' aspect of PL I pumped up my bearlike stats and played my char as aggressively as I could without any thought to what was expected by the other players. Then I started to run into the expectations and thus discovered that I had the ability to rez/buff others. I used it to the best of my abilities, to the detriment of my char's life many times, and then discovered that many bear players, and coincidentalmage players, were way too demanding on being rezed right now! Regardless of the fact that I might be taking on a mob by myself all of a sudden. I'm now of the mind that I'll do my best to find someone to rez ONCE it is safe for me to do so. If they start spamming me then they are on their own and can respawn.
Also, I didn't start playing PL so I could run around and keep everyone alive. That's what health potions are for. If I have to constantly buy them and use them (sorry but it takes forever for the heal to regen compared to potion use) then sure as shyte birds and bears can do likewise. Am I off my rocker to think this way?
For those that say I should just play the bear then, I do have a bear but find him much too lame for my personality. My bird is almost as much fun as my mage so will probably get it up to lvl 56 once my mage is up there. JMHO.
I'm level 52. I just changed my stats from str/dex to int/dex. (Note: 67 dex in both cases) By changing to int instead of str, my healing went from 80-160 to 118-239. (also, fire/lighting damage is up)
Now my str 50 Hate set is in storage, and i'm wearing a cheap set of 51 Flusher's. I look like all the other cloned red sewer mages. I thought I would have a problem with dying easy, but that does not seem to be the case. I was trying to avoid the clone look, but I suppose I can get used to it.
lol
Yesterday I was soloing with a locked instance in BS. A friend says, "pw plz". I thought about it, and didn't respond. Then I get another "pw plz". So, i figured, why not, gave the password, and let the bird in.
I'm half done with the maze, so he has a long way to run. He immediately rushes into a pack of mobs and dies instantly. I revive him, and he does the same, again. I revive, etc, about 5 times. Then, he says "omfg!" and tries one more time, dies, and exits. There was no way I could keep this guy alive, and he probably thought I was playing wrong.
I go back to pulling 1 or 2 at a time with my mage, and didn't die, not even once. I even soloed two mini bosses.
Is it so hard to think that there is maybe more than one strategy? The "rush in and blast away" strategy isn't the only way to play. And, is sometimes not possible if the group is weak.
I can look at a group and see that we need to pull a few out of a room first before rushing in. When I see it coming, I try not to die so I can revive the mess. But, whats worse than the failed attempt is that people are so quick to exit a game instead of trying again. I guess it's the mages fault, so they leave to look for a better mage.
I see two extremes: people who want to just play as they want and people who want to play as a team. There is no right answer.
However, you have to admit that you can do a little bit of both. Healing and reving others is in your best interest, and keeps people happy. Yes they can use pots. BUT a Mage with high m/s can heal for no cost, so just do so. Also, you can't expect a Mage to be your guardian angel. Your own darn fault if you die, you should play according to your groups abilities.
I think reviving with the full ability to should be noted and used; I've seen a lot of mages just running around throwing spells with their group dead right next to them.
Of course, a Mage following common courtesy should heal whenever that button is available, as it should not effect mana or timing significantly.
vulgar, that sig made me lol.
Revived this thread cuz, man, with the new maps (nuri), people's armors that served well in sewers are now just not strong enough and they're getting hit hard, especially at the boss. This is where pots are needed.
I was running in a pug with a bear that had NO pots (seriously) and was telling us to heal heal. I was hitting the heal button every time it came up green. Level 55+ should know that heal is not perpetual, it's like the other skills, there's a cooldown period during which HIT HEALTH POTS. To add insult to injury, said bear didn't hold agro anyway, so I was alternating heal with hitting my health pots while it was in cooldown to keep alive. Bears not being able to tank all the time I would not have minded, given the difficulties of holding agro with some of these new bosses (e.g. the lion sometimes ignores the bear and heads straight for the bird/mage), but this guy was telling us how to do our job while he wasn't able to do his. BTW thanks to the person that said I was doing a good job--appreciation not necessary but is nice when it happens.
Then there was the 59 bird that thought that, because I was buffing with rev (yes, rev buffs the team) and he was having to hit pots at the boss (he's a bird, he gets agro!), I wasn't hitting heal. BTW I have heal maxed and a decent mana regen.
I BLAME LEVEL 55+ CLUELESS ON ELIXIRS (definitely not all elixir users are noobs, but elixirs are allowing many to come up in the game without knowing how to play it or how the other classes work).
OK rant over, my friends rock :)
Hi fairly new to the forums here but not to gaming. I've been playing RPGs since the 80s. Usually a cleric which is a lot like the Mage/enchantress. A more limited spell book and lower hp being the biggest commonalities. I've been on a couple of runs where the bird or bear actually asked us to wait while they bought POTS, and one bear who actually knew that rev had a hidden buff!!! Not because he was a bear but that he took the time to read up on what the skills of others could do. Of course he could have had a Mage as an alternate character..Idk
However all the above being said I spam the snot out of my heal and res. It's not my fault if ur not in range because u ran ahead of the party, or ran off in another direction. I'm not going risk the larger party for one body. I will try to find you once the killing is over. Im also going to stick with The largest group if it gets split up. So for the fighter types give ur Mage a chance to heal and buff you before running off to bleed some more. I don't even want to think about all the buffs I've wasted because the fighters ran off before I could get to them. <Sigh> Save the pots for when the mage cant get to u. Wait for the buffs to come up and if the Mage doesnt do it. Ask for them. And if it's a noob, Splain it to them nicely and directthem to forums there are some excellent posts here. We all had to learn. If he/she doesn't then find another Mage. I learned a LOT about being a spell slinger from my fighters ove 30 plus years of throwing dice. LOL.
As a fighter friend once told me in game, "YOU are a squishy you stay behind the big bad meat shield"
Know this post is old, but since it got necro'd I thought I'd reply. This used to be a bug way back when, was awesome in pve, especially in swamps when it was hardcore. Devs fixed this bug right before/along with the release of pvp. A Mage was most likely around that you didn't see:)
As someone with a mage main, this whole thread infuriates me... Yes, if you aren't reviving quickly you are not doing your job!
Reviving someone doesn't make you more likely to die if you know how to play! First off, right after you auto, you should be casting non-stop.
Timing bov and mana shield are the only possible excuses, and even then, you should delay a max of one or two global cooldowns, which should be faster than they type rev.
Sorry for the drunken rant, but let me add something constructive technique wise. Never stand still as a mage. After you follow in the bear, start a small circular pattern while watching your life and party's life.
If you draw aggro, begin to widen the circle as much as possible and kite til the tank does it's job (to all the fail bears). As soon as someone dies, rev... Period... train yourself to know where skills are so you don't need to look at what skill you are using.
In a fight, if you only look at one thing, let it be the health bars... watch your movement with your peripherals.
So many people tell mages to just spam heal, and quite frankly, only low skill mages should do that. Heal when the tank is taking dmg or getting debuffed! Spam heal often results in healing people with full health and forcing you to lose valuable seconds!
And don't forget the old mmo truth that is the same in every mmo ever...
If the healer dies it's the tanks fault!
If the tank dies it's the healers fault!
If the DPS die, it's their own damn fault!
That's for all the birds and mages who think dps is more important than healing!
Haven't played as a mage yet. I'd love to get some input as to if it's worth making another character.
Reggin, you need to read the thread more. It isn't that mages don't want to rev or are taking their time. People are dying and then expecting the mage to be able to wade to them in the mob quickly and rev them. MANY times I've hit rev the moment I see that red exclamation mark only to see that it's someone that's wandered off to another mob before the team has finished killing one. I don't mind that, and I don't mind going over to them, but there are some who think we can magically teleport ourselves over and either leave before we get to them or abuse us as we're making our way over. Rev has a LIMITED RANGE.
Also, it's not just GCD that's causing the delay, it's the fact that the skills themselves take a while to regen after being hit--and heal is one. I think some people, according to this thread, think that heal and rev works like other games and is instantaneous and haswider range?
Then there are those who are lying there, not fighting and thus have all the time in the world to check, fail to register that the mage has died and has respawned and is walking back to the fight. Even worst, even when I message, "Respawned, walking back," they don't read the chat and get impatient. I have spent many a plat, real world money, to respawn on the spot so that I can rev the team, but I can't afford to do this all the time, so I sometimes respawn.
As for drawing aggro, yup, I kite and stay back, but the case above was a bear without any pots who was using that as an excuse for not taking aggro.
To be absolutely fair, yes, there are crap mages. I have on occasions whistled dixie while the other mage in the group carries on fighting and moves to the next mob. Luckily, someone in the team eventually tells them to rev me lol. Or that other mage dies... And, in my low level farming bird, I have stopped expecting mages to hit heal. One mage stood over the entire dead team and said, "Don't expect me to heal." Hey dude, didn't want you to heal, but a rev would have been nice. Wasn't that great a fighter either, the leech.
