No one told the people to spend that much on those sets :)

I am sure by now we know that in an MMO prices fluctuate, and that's a good thing.

They made an assumption that there would be no more stronger sets, and they lost the bet.

I agree.
Totally every value drops one day, regardless of the level of the item, you should already buy it knowing that it will be outdated, don't buy it thinking about selling a more expensive old set, at least not a visibly ugly set.
