Look for hints as well. I find that when I'm on dates, girls give off subtle hints. Also, do not be timid. They like the confidence; the majority of them do anyway.

Some hints to look out for:

If you catch her staring at your lips or face a few times.
Blowing air, trying to buy time.
Nervousness.
Silence-- Note, this one is rather risky. I find though if conversation isn't stirring, kissing makes up for it.
