Chapter 3: Gratitude
Mikhailov: “Charge!”
As we ran down the slide of bricks and dirt, the rest of the soldiers from the ground floor charged. As we passed the big hole of the giant walls, we jumped on every small brick fences. Our furry hands were clutched tightly with our rifles as we roared for victory desperately. Most of the soldiers went to every building to hunt every Dark Alterran. Few of them were on top of the roof, waving their weapons and cheering, while the enemies were retreating as the armored vehicles kept firing.
Mikhailov: “Comrade, go to one of the buildings! We don’t want a single living disgusting creature in our path to the Alterran Holy Palace! I will follow you!”
A big gray, ruined apartment stopped me, so I checked inside. Up the stairs, one of the Dark Alterran soldier above grabbed his dark spear and was about to throw at me, but I quickly shot him as his blood splattered from his dark breastplate. Every room, there was nothing but and corpses of Dark Alterran rebels. Bullet holes were everywhere on the wall and a pool of dark blood, too. The armored cars must’ve wiped them out. I ran upstairs until I’ve reached the roof. There were hundreds of demolished buildings and few of them were on fire. Suddenly, I saw a big castle far away, the Alterran Holy Palace. Up in the sky, crimson biplanes roared as they flew like an eagle. Below the street, there were Rushians charging, including the armored cars.
Mikhailov: “All clear, comrade?”
It was Mikhailov. He spotted a soldier setting up a heavy machine gun as the soldier aimed at the rebels.
Mikhailov: Private! Let this fellow comrade allow to use your machine gun!”
The private soldier suddenly stood up and saluted in front of Mikhailov and me.
UUSR Soldier: “Absolutely, Commander Mikhailov!”
He grabbed his own rifle and stormed downstairs to join the charging Rushians. As I equipped the heavy machine gun and pulled the trigger, POK! POK! POK! POK! POK! POK! Bullets flew from the barrel as the Dark Alterrans were being mowed down. I kept firing as I aimed down the iron sights and didn’t stop. Who knows? One of the archers would have shot me! POK! POK! POK! POK- Tak! Tak! Tak! Tak! I’ve used all the ammo. One of the armed Rushians ran to the rooftops and saluted.
UUSR Soldier: “The enemy forces are retreating, Commander! We’ve wiped them all out!”
Mikhailov: “Good! We will announce tomorrow when we’ll arrive at Fort Balefort! Help the citizens.”
Fort Blackstone, Balefort
The golden sky appeared as we helped the citizens of the Alterran Kingdom. The soldiers gave the citizens our food and medicine. They’ve suffered more than we did after the invasion. The Ursan citizens were recruiting to join the army. As I watched the Rushians helping them, he murmured under his breath.
Mikhailov: “We should spread our word…”
As a group of soldiers and Mikhailov went out of the ruined apartment, he stood inside the armored jeep. He grabbed the black microphone as he announced.
Mikhailov: “Elf Queen’s people, I announce that the Union of the Ursan Socialist Republics has surrounded your peaceful kingdom. Do not fear! We will crush Silknight’s vulnerable soldiers and anyone in our path! Join us, the Crimson Army! After we take the capital, we will bring back balance, so you can all live in harmony! Comrades! The national anthem!”
The whole Rushian soldiers stood up with their rifles in their back, including me. All of us saluted and sang with pride.
“Славься, дом медведей
оплотом товарищей в братство сильных
партия Драгунова, кровь товарищей
триумфу Aльтерра ведет!”
“URAAA!” There was silence for a second and suddenly, the citizens cheered! We stood there silently, smiling as if we were heroes of Alterra.
Mikhailov: “To the Alterran Holy Palace, my comrades! Follow me!”
As we marched to the forest road, all of us sang the national anthem again. The citizens were waving and were saying good-byes to all of us. I drove the jeep next to Mikhailov as the soldiers kept marching and singing. We are Rushians. We never take one step back.
