It could be that they just remove you from their friends list or their accounts no longer exist

I agree with this suggestion. It's a simple solution to what was an extremely irritating problem last year..

+10000% to this suggestion it will also help when trying to invite players to your party that have insane names like "xxkehsiotjseznnaaxx or similarly random names lol
