It's an extended spellbook -- the first 4 are shown for quick access, but to see the rest of your skills (ie, lesser used ones once you get more than 4), you'd hit that book button and cast the spell...

I encountered a similar issue on the second Forest level with a zombie who was part of the group at the end by the chests. I had aggro'd a zombie and accidentally also pulled the faster scarier...
