Really? What if it was because of some extravagant technical jargon which only few on these forums understood? You still want that explanation? Sometimes things just "go wrong" for whatever reason. Not sure why it is such a big deal to know exactly what happened.

Lost an Amazon EC2 EBS volume that runs the RAID for the DB, causing the DB process to hang when trying to write to the hung RAID/volume.
