I think the more reputation points (thanks) you receive, the more green bars appear... This is from prior experiences, and I'm not so sure myself
I have 24 thanks and only 1 bar waaaah :'(

There was a thread which explained it pretty well awhile ago...
Anyhoo, there are eleven bars, five dark and six light green. Each thank you receive gets you 2 rep points. A thumb up on the other hand will reward you as much rep as the person who thumbs you up has rep power. For example, I have 58 rep power (yes go ahead and have a quick laugh) so, if I thumb you up now, you'll be boosted up by 58 rep points.
To progress, you need 100 points per dark green bar and 200 per light green, if I'm correct - I didn't pay attention to my rep a lot.
I'll try and dig out that guide btw, the OP there explains much better than me.

hi, i'm new to the forum so i just like to ask what would rep points, thumbs up or ranks does to you?
Really...absolutely nothing. Some people I've seen thank people only to increase these ranks for eachother even though they're clearly arguing with eachother. There was a time on forums where your rep meant your were knowledgeable and respected....and for those who have earned their reps the right way, they represent that exact notion...those who do it for personal gain are like killfarmers and flag runners in CTF who get mad when you don't follow their rules.
In short: For the most part it signifies respectability and knowledge....some people just try to rank up to make themselves look better.
i dont know anyone who does this, but pls show me them! We all need to have a good troll one in a while
